Hi all,
I was off traveling for while, socializing some of the ideas we have been
discussing with folks in the Semantic Web community in Europe. I'll send
another message about the potentials for geotagging and other things about
data interoperability that are relevant to us.
It looks like our discussion has stabilized to a point where we are ready to
roll up our sleeves and start putting some points on the map. We now have
some dimensions on which to look at the design issues:
- use
<http://tagcommons.org/2007/02/28/functional-requirements-for-sharing-tag-da
ta/> cases and requirements
- sharing
<http://tagcommons.org/2007/03/02/ontologies-vs-formats-vs-schema-vs-apis/>
mechanisms (DB schema, formats, ontologies, etc.)
- prior work (Annotea, Newman's tag ontology, the rel=tag
microformat)
- stakeholders (Nitin's
<http://lists.tagcommons.org/pipermail/wg-tagcommons.org/2007-March/000057.h
tml> list)
And now things to do:
- work out a conceptualization, independent of format or level -
just words
- analyze how each element of the conceptualization relates to
existing specifications (Annotea, microformats, etc)
- check it against the use cases and other requirements to look for
coverage and gaps
and then move toward consolidating on an agreement.
So, for the next step I have set up a wiki. I have modeled the wiki roughly
on the excellent microformats.org <http://microformats.org/wiki/Main_Page>
site. (Peter Yim had graciously offered to host the wiki on his
collaboration infrastructure <http://ontolog.cim3.net/> , but I wanted to
reuse as much as I could from microformats.org).
Unfortunately, the default self-service permissions model for wikis just
leads to immediate attack by spam bots. So I had to lock it down to
invitation only, again :-(.
I will be creating accounts for all of you who have contributed anything to
the discussion list to date. If anyone else wants an account on the wiki,
please just drop me a line and I will add you right away. If you have
written to this discussion list, expect a weird message from
onto-admin at tagcommons.org sending you a "new password" and link to log in.
The link to the wiki is
http://tagcommons.org/wiki/
and the root of the conceptualization tree is
http://tagcommons.org/wiki/Tag_Data_Conceptualization
Have at it!
