Lee Iverson talked about this at TagCamp late 2005.
The key being that successful tagging applications make the group-value
a side-effect of creating self-value.
Tagging systems are successfull to the extent that they simultaneously
a) motivate tagging for selfish purposes
AND
b) make the group value just fall out as a side-effect or make it
minimally bothersome.
Del.icio.us makes all tags public by default and hence exposes group
value with no extra effort on the part of the tagger.
Older groupware and portal systems fail when they expect users to set
aside time and effort to create group value without any motivation or
accretion of self-value.
The Amazon vs LibraryThing comparison seems to be a case of the same.
